Sedation dentistry is the answer for everything from dental anxiety to full-fledged dental phobia. Nowadays, there are a variety of sedation methods available to make dental treatments less stressful for individuals who despise dental visits. At Apollo Dental Centre, we offer our patients the following dental sedation options:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled through a mask that fits over your nose. It is commonly known as laughing gas for the feelings of calm euphoria that it produces. While under the effects of nitrous oxide, you are still aware and responsive to your surroundings.
With oral sedation, you will take a strong sleeping pill an hour before your procedure. As the medication takes effect, your central nervous system will slow down. This means you will be aware of your surroundings, but are less responsive to external stimuli. You will also have a reduced ability to feel pain. Afterwards, you will have little to no memory of the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Am I a candidate for dental sedation?
You may be a candidate for dental sedation if you:
- Have dental anxiety/phobia
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
- Need multiple dental procedures
- Need a more invasive procedure
- Are a child and have a hard time sitting still
However, in order to safely use dental sedation, you must be in good overall health and have no medical issues that could increase your risk of sedation complications. Dental sedation is not recommended for pregnant women, individuals with allergies to benzodiazepines, people with sleep apnea, or people taking certain medications. Ultimately, only an examination can determine if dental sedation is right for you. What can I expect when under dental sedation?
While you are under the effects of dental sedation, your experience will vary depending on the type of sedation method, the dose, and how your body responds to the sedation. With that being said, here is a brief overview of what you will likely experience:
Nitrous oxide sedation begins with a small mask being placed over your nose. At first, this mask will only blow oxygen into your nose, however nitrous oxide will be slowly added. Within minutes of inhaling the nitrous oxide, you will begin to feel a deep sense of calm and even euphoria. Even though you will be able to hear and somewhat process everything happening around you, you simply won’t care. During the last five minutes of wearing the mask, you will start inhaling oxygen again, which will bring you back to normal with no long term effects.
Oral sedation starts by taking a sedative pill about an hour before your appointment. As the medication takes effect, you will become very relaxed and may even fall into a light sleep. You will be aware of what is happening around you and will be able to respond, however you will be indifferent. After the procedure, you will have little to no memory of the event.
Will I need to follow any special instructions after having dental sedation?
After having dental sedation using nitrous oxide, you will generally not have any special instructions to follow. This is because the effects of nitrous oxide wear off as soon as you stop inhaling the gas and don’t have any long term effects. In rare cases, however, you may experience nausea, vomiting, headache, sleepiness, and/or sweating or shivering.
After having oral sedation, however, there are a few special instructions you will need to follow. For starters, you will be unable to drive yourself home and will need to have a driver present to take you home. It is also recommended to have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours to monitor you for any possible problems.
