At Apollo Dental Centre, we offer a different approach to traditional metal braces. Instead of using the traditional method, we use the Damon System. While this approach uses archwires and brackets like the traditional method, it does not use elastic ties to hold the archwires in place. Instead, a slide mechanism connects the brackets to the archwire, which allows the archwire to move freely. This reduces friction and decreases the risk of bacterial accumulation around the appliance. The Damon System yields a Damon Smile, which is characterized by a broad arch, reduced dark triangles at your mouth’s corners, upright teeth, and a curved smile arc that follows the lower lip.

Although traditional metal braces use elastic ties to hold the archwires in place, it has been found that these ties tend to collect harmful bacteria that can increase the risk of tooth decay. Additionally, elastic ties also cause friction, which has been found to slow down treatment.

What can I expect when undergoing orthodontic treatment with Damon Braces at Apollo Dental Centre?

When undergoing orthodontic treatment using Damon Braces, you can expect to have the brackets cemented onto the front surface of your teeth and an archwire placed across these brackets. The brackets used for Damon Braces are smaller than those used for metal braces and have rounded corners to make them more comfortable. There is also the option of Damon Clear, which uses clear brackets. Once your Damon Braces have been applied, they will remain in place until your treatment is complete. Minor adjustments will be occasionally made throughout the course of your treatment. Since the archwires are made from light titanium wires that gently move the teeth, you should only experience little discomfort after adjustments are made. Despite the fact that Damon Braces apply less force than metal braces, most patients finish treatment about seven months sooner than those with traditional braces.

Will I need to wear a retainer after having Damon Braces?

Yes, regardless of the orthodontic method used to treat your teeth, you will need to wear a retainer after undergoing active orthodontic treatment. This is because retainers “retain” the correct position of the teeth and prevent them from returning to their original position. Therefore, it is highly important to wear your retainer as directed to maintain your results. In most cases, you will start by wearing your retainer full time, then eventually wean to only wearing it at night.
